Rock crystal, also known as clear quartz, holds a special place in the writings of St. Hildegard of Bingen. In her Physica, she describes its traditional applications for the eyes, throat, neck, heart, and digestive system.
According to Hildegardian tradition, rock crystal is particularly valued for its association with the thyroid gland, lymphatic system, vision, and the body's internal balance.
Wearing rock crystal as a necklace offers a beautiful way to keep this remarkable gemstone close to the neck and throat, areas of particular importance in Hildegardian gemstone traditions.
St. Hildegard on Rock Crystal
In her Physica, St. Hildegard writes:
"One whose eyes are blurry should heat crystal in the sun and place it often, so heated, over his eye. Because it is of a watery nature, it draws bad humors from the eyes, which improves the vision."
She also describes its traditional application to the neck:
"If swelling or scrofula grow on someone's neck, he should heat a crystal in the sun and tie it over the place for day or night. If he does this often, they will vanish."
Regarding the heart and digestive system, she writes:
"If he ails in his heart, stomach, or belly, he should heat the crystal in the sun and pour water over it, leaving the crystal in the water for a little while. Then he should take it out and frequently drink the water."
These passages reflect St. Hildegard's understanding of the natural properties of gemstones and their place in caring for the human body.
Gemstones and Minerals in St. Hildegard's Medicine
In St. Hildegard's medicine, gemstones and minerals are not regarded as amulets or objects of supernatural power. A stone is not God, nor does it possess divine power of its own.
Just like plants and animals, stones and minerals are part of God's Creation. St. Hildegard presents them in relation to their Creator, who, in His wisdom and goodness, has provided mankind with means of restoring health not only through plants and animals but also through the nonliving elements of nature.
In this understanding, the value of gemstones lies not in magic or superstition, but in the gifts of Creation and the wisdom of the One who created them.
Traditional Hildegardian Uses of Rock Crystal
1. Thyroid Gland & Hormonal Balance
In later Hildegardian traditions, rock crystal is associated with supporting thyroid function, including conditions involving an overactive or underactive thyroid and thyroid enlargement (goiter).
Traditionally, the stone was worn as a necklace close to the throat or placed against the neck after warming in sunlight.
Another historical preparation, known as crystal wine, involved placing a sun-warmed crystal in wine for approximately one hour before removing the stone.
2. Lymphatic System, Neck Swellings & Throat
St. Hildegard describes the use of sun-warmed rock crystal for swellings around the neck and throat, including enlarged lymph nodes and the uvula.
Traditional methods included wearing the stone as a necklace, securing it near the affected area with a dressing, or preparing crystal water.
3. Heart, Stomach & Digestive Balance
St. Hildegard recommended crystal water for discomfort involving the heart, stomach, and abdomen.
Later Hildegardian traditions also associate rock crystal with the autonomic nervous system and gastrocardiac discomfort.
Historical practices included placing a sun-warmed crystal over the upper abdomen or preparing crystal water by immersing a sun-warmed stone in drinking water.
4. Vision & Eye Comfort
St. Hildegard particularly valued rock crystal for its traditional association with eyesight.
She described warming the stone in sunlight and placing it near the eyes, believing that its watery nature helped improve blurred vision.
5. Skin Care & Eczema
Later Hildegardian practices describe the use of rock crystal in connection with violet salve for weeping eczema and irritated skin.
In this tradition, the gemstone was placed in the salve as part of a historical skin-care preparation.
6. Traditional Use for Nerve-Related Discomfort
St. Hildegard also describes applying sun-warmed rock crystal to areas affected by a condition she called nesseden, or nessia, traditionally associated with painful bodily discomfort.
The warmed stone was placed over the affected area as part of this historical practice.
Natural Beauty in Every Stone
Each rock crystal chip has its own distinctive shape, size, and degree of transparency, making every necklace naturally unique.
The clear, luminous appearance of rock crystal makes this necklace a versatile accessory, suitable for everyday wear or special occasions.
Its placement close to the neck also reflects the traditional Hildegardian practice of wearing rock crystal near the throat.
Whether chosen for its natural beauty, its historical significance, or as a thoughtful gift, this necklace is a lovely reminder of the harmony between humanity and God's creation.
