The King of Bitters — a powerful herb treasured in St. Hildegard's traditional medicine.

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is an intensely bitter, aromatic herb with a long history in herbal medicine. Often referred to as the "King of Bitters," wormwood has traditionally been valued for supporting digestion and stimulating appetite, as well as its role in a variety of herbal preparations.

Wormwood holds a particularly important place in the teachings of St. Hildegard of Bingen, who regarded it as one of God's most remarkable plants.

St. Hildegard on Wormwood

In her Physica, St. Hildegard writes:

"Wormwood is very hot and has much strength. It is the principal remedy for all ailments."

This striking statement reflects the extraordinary importance St. Hildegard placed on wormwood in her understanding of natural medicine.

In Hildegardian tradition, wormwood is used in several preparations, including wormwood wine, herbal salves, and preparations for oral care.

Hildegardian Uses of Wormwood

Throughout centuries of European herbal practice, wormwood has been valued for its distinctive bitter compounds and aromatic properties.

  • Digestive Support: Traditionally used as a bitter herb to stimulate appetite and support digestive secretions.
  • Wormwood Wine: One of St. Hildegard's best-known remedies against various ailments as well as immunity booster (requires fresh wormwood juice)
  • Wormwood Salve: Used in traditional Hildegardian preparations for external application.
  • Traditional Oral Care: In Hildegardian herbal practice, dried wormwood and verbena are cooked together in wine to prepare a traditional mouth rinse. This preparation is used for various types of toothaches and dental inflammation, including cases in which root canal treatment has been recommended.
  • Traditional Herbal Practices: natural medicine practitioners have used wormwood in preparations associated with intestinal complaints, shingles, and seasonal wellness.

The King of Bitters

Wormwood is distinguished by its intensely bitter taste, primarily associated with naturally occurring compounds such as absinthin.

Bitter herbs have traditionally played an important role in European food and herbal culture. Wormwood is among the most recognizable examples, appreciated for its characteristic aroma and unmistakable bitterness.
