St. Hildegard on Masterwort Root (Peucedanum ostruthium):
"Whoever has a fever, regardless of its type, should take masterwort, crush it gently, and then fill half a cup with the crushed or grated plant. Then pour good wine over it to the brim of the vessel and let it stand overnight. In the morning, top it up again with wine and drink it on an empty stomach. This should be done for three to five days, and health will be restored, because the warmth of masterwort, combined with the warmth of wine and consumed in this way, also drives out fevers—especially when it is allowed to steep overnight, so it blends better with the wine.”
— From Physica by St. Hildegard of Bingen
Instructions for preparation and use:
-
1 tablespoon chopped masterwort root
-
1/2 cup wine
Prepare the ingredients in the evening, let steep overnight, and in the morning, top up with a little fresh wine. Prepare a fresh portion each evening. Sip the wine throughout the day. The treatment should last 3–5 days. Do not stop too early, as the fever may return. For small children, give only a few teaspoons or drops.
