Amethyst Chip Necklace – Skin Care, Harmony & Inner Balance
Inspired by the Wisdom of St. Hildegard of Bingen
This beautiful Amethyst Chip Necklace is made with natural amethyst gemstone chips, each displaying unique shapes and lovely shades of violet and purple. The irregular, polished stones give the necklace a delicate, organic appearance, celebrating the natural beauty of God's creation.
Amethyst holds a special place in the writings of St. Hildegard of Bingen. In her Physica, she describes this gemstone as possessing qualities of warmth, fire, and air, and discusses its traditional applications for skin care and physical well-being.
Wearing amethyst as a necklace offers a simple and beautiful way to keep this remarkable gemstone close throughout the day.
St. Hildegard on Amethyst
In her Physica, St. Hildegard writes:
"Amethyst develops when the sun shows its circle, as though it were crowned, which it does when it prefigures some change in the vestment of the Lord, in the Church."
St. Hildegard particularly valued amethyst for its traditional applications to the skin. She describes rubbing the moistened stone over facial blemishes and preparing amethyst water by holding the gemstone over steam before placing it in water.
Gemstones and Minerals in St. Hildegard's Medicine
In St. Hildegard's medicine, gemstones and minerals are not regarded as amulets or objects of supernatural power. A stone is not God, nor does it possess divine power of its own.
Just like plants and animals, stones and minerals are part of God's Creation. St. Hildegard presents them in relation to their Creator, who, in His wisdom and goodness, has provided mankind with means of restoring health not only through plants and animals but also through the nonliving elements of nature.
In this understanding, the value of gemstones lies not in magic or superstition, but in the gifts of Creation and the wisdom of the One who created them.
Traditional Hildegardian Uses of Amethyst
1. Skin Care – Blemishes, Pigmentation & Complexion
St. Hildegard recommended rubbing facial blemishes, discoloration, and other skin imperfections with an amethyst moistened with saliva. She also described preparing amethyst water by holding the stone over steam and then briefly immersing it in warm water. Later Hildegardian tradition recommends washing the face with this water twice daily.
2. Swellings, Cysts, Tumors & Warts
In Physica, St. Hildegard describes applying a moistened amethyst to newly developing swellings. Later traditions extend this practice to cysts, warts, and other skin growths, either by gently rubbing the affected area or securing the stone in place for several hours.
3. Insect Bites & Skin Reactions
St. Hildegard recommended passing amethyst over spider bites. Later Hildegardian traditions describe applying a moistened stone to insect bites to address localized swelling, irritation, and inflammation.
4. Inner Balance, Harmony & Emotional Well-Being
Amethyst is traditionally associated with inner harmony, tranquility, and emotional balance. Wearing it visibly as a necklace, bracelet, or ring serves as a reminder to cultivate peace and equilibrium in daily life.
5. Amethyst Sauna – Traditional Support During Serious Illness
Later Hildegardian traditions describe the amethyst sauna as a practice associated with bodily purification and well-being, including during serious illnesses such as cancer.
6. Amethyst Steam & Inhalation Traditions
Later Hildegardian practices also describe amethyst inhalations historically associated with precancerous conditions. Traditional accounts involve soaking the stone in cold water for five days, holding it over steam, returning it to the water, and subsequently using the reheated water for inhalation over a four- to five-week period.
7. Traditional Protection Against Snakes & Adders
St. Hildegard believed that snakes and adders avoided amethyst. Traditionally, the stone was worn, carried, or placed visibly in a room for protection.
Natural Beauty in Every Stone
Each amethyst chip has its own distinctive shape, size, and shade, making every necklace slightly different and naturally unique.
