Traveling with Hildegard: Essentials for the Journey
Blessings, dear friend —
As we prepare for Thanksgiving journeys and Christmas pilgrimages — flights, long drives, crowded airports, changing climates, and nights in unfamiliar beds — it is wise to travel the Hildegardian way: grounded, supported, and accompanied by the time-tested remedies that strengthen the body and steady the soul.
Did you know that Saint Hildegard traveled too? Though she lived in the 12th century, she undertook four major preaching journeys across Germany. She was the only woman of her time permitted to preach publicly, an extraordinary exception. Her first preaching tour began around age 60, and her final one concluded when she was about 72.
Can you imagine a 72 year old abbess traveling on horseback, on foot, by boat, crossing rivers and provinces, proclaiming God’s truth with such courage and radiance? What a marvel of strength and divine fire!
For Saint Hildegard, travel is not merely geographical or a movement from one place to another. It is a spiritual passage where viriditas, the greening power of God, accompanies us through every threshold. With a little preparation, we can keep ourselves well, balanced, and ready to savor the gift of the holidays.
Your Hildegardian Travel Essentials
Here is your curated list of core Hildegardian remedies, perfect for holiday journeys and winter gatherings.
1. Geranium Mix (Pelargonium Spice Mixture)
“It strengthens the body's natural defense system against viruses and bacteria, prevents mucus retention, relieves bothersome cold symptoms (headaches, runny nose, cough, gastrointestinal problems, etc.), and prevents complications such as weakness or inflammation of the heart muscle.”
(A. Walkowska, Return to Harmony)
This warm, aromatic blend offers efficacious, purely herbal protection against viral and bacterial infections. It brings gentle heat to the chest, supports the throat, and helps the body remain resilient during seasonal exposure.
Perfect for: airplanes, travel shifts, crowded events, or when something is coming on.
The Three Staples of Hildegardian Health
These three spices — Galangal, Bertram, and Diptam — form the foundation of Saint Hildegard’s daily healing system.
Galangal (Alipinia Officinarum)
“Whoever suffers from pains and is in danger of poor blood circulation (fainting) should immediately eat a sufficient amount of galangal and he will feel better.”
(Saint Hildegard, Physica)
Warming and invigorating, galangal strengthens circulation, supports digestion, clears fogginess, and restores vitality. Saint Hildegard recommends it as one of her most important remedies for energy and heart strength.
- ◆Supports heart vitality
- ◆Warms the core and stimulates digestion
- ◆Sharpens clarity and renews energy
- ◆Brings balance after heavy meals
- ◆A perfect non caffeinated afternoon pick me up
- ◆Treats motion sickness, dizziness, and states of exhaustion and weakness
Delicious healing pairing: Try a pinch of galangal with a warm cup of parsley wine. What a pairing! Watch the recipe here: Parsley Wine Video.
Bertram (Anacyclus Pyrethrum)
“Spanish chamomile protects from the putrefaction process, improves the blood, and cleanses the brain. A sick person who is entirely exhausted is restored to health. It does not leave any undigested food in the organism since its heat disintegrates each morsel of food. Eaten willingly, Spanish chamomile reduces any excessive amount of mucus in the head, cleansing bodily fluids and brightening the eyes.”
(Saint Hildegard, Physica)
Saint Hildegard considers Bertram essential for daily digestive purity and resilience. It is a bright, stimulating root that keeps the entire digestive system clear and strong.
- ◆Cleanses and strengthens the stomach
- ◆Optimizes nutrient absorption
- ◆Stimulates healthy digestive juices
- ◆Supports immune function through digestive strength
- ◆Purifies what Saint Hildegard calls “unclean juices”
- ◆Awakens clarity, warmth, and steady energy
- ◆Proven effective in treating indigestion, anemia, stomach disorders, diabetes, toothaches, and rheumatic conditions
Diptam (Dictamnus albus)
“Just as what comes from fire contains heat, so dittany effectively counteracts disease.”
(Saint Hildegard, Physica)
Diptam is a deeply decalcifying and harmonizing root that also helps prevent arteriosclerosis. According to Saint Hildegard, it supports kidney function, which she calls the “firmament of the body,” the inner structure that keeps all systems aligned and energized.
- ◆Regulates the entire lipid environment (supports healthy cholesterol metabolism, goodbye high cholesterol!)
- ◆Supports healthy kidney function
- ◆Encourages elimination of inflammatory waste
- ◆Helps prevent stones (calculi) through gentle decalcification
- ◆Helps prevent arteriosclerosis
Important: Because Diptam naturally decalcifies, begin with very small amounts, a micro dose, especially if you have a history of stones or calculi.

Travel, Table, and Thanksgiving: A Hildegardian Reflection
As we journey to gather with those we love, Saint Hildegard reminds us that healing is relational. Catholic anthropology teaches the same: we are created for communion.
The table becomes an altar of gratitude, generosity, listening, reconciliation, virtue, and joy. Healthy relationships green the soul, bringing viriditas to our bodies, minds, and spirits.
May we enter this season with hearts full of gratitude, temperance, patience, charity, and joy.
